How to Get Access to a Client's Facebook Page
Feb 26, 2023
Do you need to manage Facebook pages and ads for clients? In this article, I’ll show you the two ways to request access to your client's Facebook assets. It’s easier than you think!
Why Do I Need To Give/Get Access?
Whether you’re a freelancer, business owner, or marketing agency, you’ll need to request or grant access to your Facebook page(s) to another person so they can help (or run) your digital marketing strategy. People typically need access to so they can:
- Create and run Facebook and Instagram ads
- Manage a Facebook Business page and Instagram account
- Create posts, stories, and reels for Instagram and Facebook
- Manage Facebook and Instagram stores
- To answer customer comments, messages, and enquires
If you want someone to perform the tasks above, you’ll need to have access or get access to the following:
- Facebook Page - to manage a page, assign page roles, and post organic content
- Facebook Ad Account - to run and manage ads
- Facebook Pixel - to manage events and create custom conversions
- Instagram - to post content, send messages, and run ads
- Product Catalogue - to run product ads and manage Facebook Commerce
- Leads - download and manage leads generated through ads
- Apps - manage your client’s custom apps
It’s Not As Simple As Giving Out The Password To Your Facebook Page
You might wonder why you can’t just give out your email and password and be done with it. Well, here’s the thing: every Facebook account is tied to one person’s private account, which can get the account owner into a lot of trouble if they give their information to the wrong person. Additionally, two-factor authentication makes things even more difficult because you will constantly be bugging the account owner for a code.
So for everyone’s safety (and sanity), you’ll need to give others access to your account. As I’ve mentioned, there are two ways you can go about it.
The First Way: Gain Access by Requesting Access
This first way of gaining access to another business’ Facebook page is probably the easiest for business owners. The person who needs access will send a request to the Facebook page owner.
Here’s how you request access to your client’s Facebook page:
Step 1: Log into business.facebook.com and click on Settings in the bottom left corner. Or you can click on Tools (also on the left-hand side) and then hit Settings.
Step 2: Click on Business Settings. It’s on the left-hand side.
Step 3: Click on Pages on the left-hand side.
Step 4: Click the blue Add button and select Request Access to the Page from the drop-down menu.
Step 5: To finish, you’ll need to add your client's Facebook page URL and click request access.
On the client's end, they will follow steps one and two. Once they’re in, your client will scroll down to "requests" in their business manager. The last thing they’ll need to do is hit accept, and they're done!
The Second Way: Your Client Can Give You Access
The second way to do this is for your client to
Step 1: Log into business.facebook.com and click on Settings in the bottom left corner. Or you can click on Tools (also on the left-hand side) and then hit Settings.
Step 2: Click on Business Settings. It’s on the left-hand side.
Step 3: Click on People. (Please note: that you should automatically be taken to the People Tab by default. This step is only necessary if you land on a different page.)
Step 4: Click on the blue Add button. You’ll need your client's cooperation because they must add YOUR email.
Step 5: Next, your client will assign you as an admin or employee role. I recommend admin access because it gives you access to more aspects of the page and any other assets you may need (i.e., Facebook page, Instagram, ad accounts, etc.).
Step 6: Check your inbox. You’ll get a notification that you can now access the client’s account. Cue the party.
In Summary
Accessing a client’s Facebook account doesn’t need to be stressful. Once you’ve done it a time or two, it's pretty easy. You can rest easy knowing that you can do an excellent job for your client without putting their account and company at risk – as you would with that old password swap you won’t be doing.
